Abstract

The Gorontalo–Biluhu Barat road section is located in Gorontalo Regency and passes through mountainous terrain with a winding alignment, which may increase the risk of accidents and affect road user safety. This study aims to evaluate the geometric design of the road section based on the 2021 Road Geometric Design Guidelines. The evaluation focuses on three main parameters: horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, and sight distance. The horizontal alignment was assessed based on the characteristics of the curves and their compliance with the specified geometric design criteria. The vertical alignment was evaluated based on the longitudinal grades at each observation station, while sight distance was analyzed according to the applicable geometric design requirements. The results indicate that all horizontal alignment elements within the evaluated road section comply with the established design criteria. However, several stations in the vertical alignment were found to have longitudinal grades exceeding the maximum allowable limit of 10%. Meanwhile, all evaluated sight distance parameters comply with the requirements of the 2021 Road Geometric Design Guidelines. These findings indicate that improvements are particularly needed in sections with excessive grades to enhance overall road safety.
